House Facts

What are the main issues facing the students you work with?

Our students are confronted with a variety of risk factors common in underserved communities. These issues include the illegal drug culture, single-parent homes, poverty, teen violence, pre-mature parenting, and the emotional and spiritual effects of welfare.

Who is in the House?

Most of the students who participate at The House are natives of the Anacostia community. We target high school students but also have a Saturday program for middle school students, and a program for 18-29 year old adults that meet twice a month.

What are the volunteer opportunities?

Many of our students suffer from a severe lack of exposure to opportunities beyond their own neighborhood. We invite our volunteers to share their gifts and world with our students.

What happens to students from The House after High School?

After graduation students typically attempt to work or attend trade school. Only a small percentage of The House graduates are able to go to college or even afford a community college. We involve many graduates in our student leadership program that teaches them interviewing techniques, as well as job and life skills.

Describe The House's relationship with Anacostia High School.

We are committed to serving Anacostia High School, loving its students and bringing every possible benefit we can through our partnerships. Our staff visits the school on a regular basis and meets with students in the cafeteria and at special assemblies coordinated by The House. The school's administration has expressed appreciation for the work we do in the lives of their students.

What role does the local church play?

To make a difference in a student's life we must also have an impact on their family. We strive to plug students and their parents into a church community. At The House we are fortunate to receive support from two urban church and a suburban church. Their participation has benefited all parties. The House welcomes church involvement and is always looking for new church partnerships.
